Fish Q&A is a Q&A community specialized in fish names. Post a photo to ask what fish it shows. If the photo AI can’t identify your fish, try asking in Fish Q&A. If you know about fish identification, please contribute answers. Let’s share what we know and enjoy identifying fish together.

About Target Fish
Fish Q&A covers about 6,000 fish species, mainly from Japan, with some from other countries. The system does not support animals other than fish, such as crustaceans, squid, or octopuses, but someone may identify them in a comment.
Answering a question
Open a question and tap Answer at the bottom of the screen. Enter a fish name, then select it from the suggestions.
The community aims to help everyone learn by sharing knowledge. Please explain the features that led you to your identification.
More than one person can suggest the same fish name
If you have new information, please post an answer even if someone has already suggested that fish name. If an answer matches your identification or makes a convincing case, vote Agree.
Voting, identification, and best answers
The people viewing a question evaluate answers by voting. Unlike a traditional forum or Q&A site, viewers other than the person asking or answering help judge correctness and choose the best answer.
For each answer, you can cast a secret vote: Agree or Disagree. The overall vote count is shown, but no one can see who voted on each answer or how many votes each answer received.
You can change or remove your vote at any time. Once voting meets the conditions and a best answer is selected, voting closes until someone posts an answer challenge.
Conditions for identification and a best answer
- At least 5 votes are required.
- A fish name is identified when at least 80% of votes Agree. Identification votes are counted by fish name, rather than by individual answer.
- If only one answer suggests the identified fish name, it becomes the best answer.
- If several answers suggest the identified fish name, the answer with the most likes becomes the best answer. If likes are tied, the earlier answer wins.
These conditions may be adjusted in the future.
Answer challenges
An identification may turn out to be wrong, or a new research paper may change a fish’s classification. You may want to add an answer and reopen voting. Fish Q&A lets you post an answer challenge even after a fish has been identified.
An answer challenge reopens voting on all answers.
For example, if people find a new answer convincing, they may change their votes on the existing answer from Agree to Disagree and vote Agree on the new answer. This may change which answer is selected as the best answer.
To prevent abuse, consecutive answer challenges on the same question must be at least 24 hours apart.
Editing and deleting posts
You can edit or delete your own posts under these conditions:
- You can delete a question only before anyone responds with an answer, vote, comment, or other response.
- You can edit a question only before it receives an answer.
- You can delete an answer only before anyone responds with a vote, comment, or other response.
If you delete your account and leave the service, your questions, answers, comments, and other posts remain unless you deleted them yourself.
Helping the photo AI learn
Photos identified through voting are used as training data for the photo AI. Your questions, answers, and votes help it improve and become more useful to everyone.
Identified photos may also be saved with their entire discussion threads for later viewing, or used in WEB Fish Pedia and related content.
We look forward to your participation!
